Meharry Medical College Library's reference librarian, Clare Kimbro, is a Nashville native and began working at Meharry in March 2020.
Clare earned her Master of Library and Information Science degree in 2017 from Dominican University in River Forest, Ill., just outside of Chicago; she earned her Bachelor of Science in Communications/Print Journalism in 1995 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and worked as a copy editor for 15 years at The Jackson Sun newspaper (Jackson, Tenn.) while also writing a weekly column on the Christian life -- Faith Matters -- and as an outdoors reporter in her latter years at the newspaper.
Prior to moving to Chicago to attend graduate school, Clare worked in Union University's library (Jackson, Tenn.) as evening circulation supervisor (2011 to 2014) while also teaching as an adjunct in Union's Communication Arts Department and serving as faculty adviser to the Cardinal & Cream campus newspaper staff, who took a newspapering class each semester for practicum credit.
After graduate school, she moved back to Nashville after 22 years of living away and worked for nearly three years as library services coordinator for Saint Thomas Health Medical Libraries at its branch at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, just a few miles from Meharry. Clare conducted literature searches for MDs, medical residents, nurse managers and nurses, along with allied health professionals and members of hospital administration; she also handled interlibrary loan/document delivery, outreach to Saint Thomas Health's nine hospitals and more than 100 clinics, and assisted with collection development and management of the hospital system's two physical libraries.
